Something I thought might be of interest to some of you. Here in the Carolinas we've been having another of those winter blasts that blew in on Friday night. We have 8 inches of snow and that's now crusted over and probably won't be melting anytime soon. It's been down in the low teens on Saturday and Sunday night with daytime highs in the thirties. It's supposed to be in the forties today but back in the dumper tomorrow with another blast blowing down from the north.

Anyway, my coop isn't heated and it's almost too far to run a heavy duty extension cord. Instead what I've been doing it to take their big plastic water jug, minus the base and I fill that up in the bathtub with hot water. Then I add a full kettle of boiling water to it from the stove. At about 9:00 I take it out and sit it in their coop. The coop is 4'X8'X4' and pretty well insulated with a thick layer of wood shavings on the floor. When I looked at the remote themometer before I left the house the temp was right at 32 F inside the coop. All nineteen of my Gold Comets were huddled up on the roosting bars over to one side of the coop. Within fifteen minutes of getting back in the house the temp was up to 40.5 F where it stayed most of the night. It was 21.5 outside at the time. When I got up this morning at 5:30 it was 34 F. Another benefit of doing this is that when I let the Gals out in the morning I can just sit their waterer back on it's base and they have fresh unfrozen water. Good Deal!
