We special ordered 5 Black Australorp pullets back in April, and they are now 10-11 weeks old. We've only ever had hens in the past, so I'm not experienced with what roosters look like as they are growing. One of ours has a tail that is very different from the rest. Kinda sticks up in straight feathers, so I'm suspecting that it may be a roo. Can you please give your opinions?? The comb does not seem to be growing any faster than the rest, though... Need some help here since we can't keep a roo where we are. I want to re-home him before he starts crowing!

Here's it's the one on the right - ???

The one on the left - ???

Here you can kinda see all of their combs. The one in question is front right - with the straight tail feathers. (Yes, one of the 5 Black Australorps is not an Australorp!! They messed up and sent us 1 barred rock ... or maybe dominique?? I don't really know the difference yet. They don't seem to realize the difference!

THANKS!!

The Australorps all look like pullets to me. The other one looks like it has a straight comb, so it is a Barred Rock pullet. Dominique's have a rose comb.

I have a Jersey Giant... I don't know if its the same as an Australorp, but they look exactly the same.. "she" is a couple weeks younger than yours but her tail is clearly longer and skinnier than my other 3 pullets, so I don't know what to think!
Maybe it's just the way these chickens grow sometimes? I've never had chickens before so I have no idea if a long tail could be normal in females or if its probably male... the crop is still small and it doesn't seem to be growing any faster than the rest! I'm not sure what to think either!

Thanks for the input. I didn't realize that the girls' tails could differ that much. :) I'll have to do some research on the difference between a rose comb and a straight comb!

lolaeve, I'd love to find out what yours turns out to be. Do you have any pictures?

could someone with both a plymouth rock roo and hen about 24 weeks old post a pic so those of us newbies can see the difference? thanks we live where we can't have roos so we need to know soon.
