I am trying to get an explanation for the death of my hen today. She was about 6 months old. Hasn't laid yet. Was attacked by a hawk several weeks ago. She seemd to be recovering fine and she was the "queen" of our roost. On Sunday we know that we had another incident with the hawk, but could see only a small scratch on her in a place close to the original injuring she suffered several weeks ago. She was lethargic after the attack on Sunday. Yesterday she was just letting me pick her up without complaining (not like her) and her eyes were alternately closed. She was sitting in her water bowl. She was low in the neck and seemed depressed. Woudln't come out with the rest of the flock today or yesterday. Went to check on her today. She was the same. I began to think maybe she has a compacted stock. Don't know. She started rattling in the chest this afternoon and when I went to check on her this evening she was dead in the coop. I did notice her poop was watery and yellow this afternoon. Don't know if I should be worried she was sick or if she was totally traumatized by the hawk attack. Any help would be great.

I really think it was the hawk attack, she had injuries you couldn't see, I don't know if you have ever butchered a chicken and seen thier insides but there is a lot of internal oragans that are close to the skin not much meat covers them and I have a feeling your chicken had some injuries to her internal organs. Sorry for your loss

I think mnferalkitty is on the mark. I had a Coopers Hawk stalking my girls recently. Very scary. From what I understand, they come back, so keep an eye out. Take care, and again, sending warm wishes.
