Hello,

So my rooster has ruined 2 of my hens' back and wings, so we put a chicken apron on them. they were on for 3 months and we took them off because nothing was growing back and they needed to be cleaned. My rowdy rooster has his favorites, and I felt they needed protection again, so we put them back on. I have a total of 4 hens and these 2 are the only ones with feather damage. All of my chickens are almost 16 months old and I believe (I am a first time owner) they will be molting soon. Will the apron affect that in any way?

I cannot get any more hens. I will not give up my rooster. My next step is separating my rooster from them. (Just wanted to clear that up before ya'll say it because my question is about molting and chicken aprons) or as I call them 'skirts"

Thanks!

Will the apron affect that in any way?
Yes, it could affect feather growth and will just be uncomfortable for them.
New pin feathers coming in are uncomfortable any way.

My next step is separating my rooster from them.
That's the best plan.
If he tries to mate them when they are full of pin feathers, it will be painful and if a pin feather breaks it can bleed like all get out.

Does everyone remove aprons during molt? Obviously if you have aprons on your hens you have a rooster. If you’re planning on keeping your rooster, which I would assume because you went for the expense of buying or sewing aprons and applying the darn things, I’m just wondering if and when is best to take them off and when is the best time to replace them?
