I bought some chicks from TSC last week. There are 3 "Red Pullets", 3 EE's and 2 white mystery pullets.... The reds and ee's were day old chicks and the mystery pullets were about a week old. TSC marked them down to $.50, so I bought them. There were actually 26 of them, but my aunt took 23. I kept 3, but lost one over the weekend. I had them in a large tub in my bathroom, but they were picking on just one of the white pullets, to the point of bleeding. I figured they needed more room so I decided to go ahead and move them outside into my smallest coop, after we made some modifications to it. They are in a 5'x8' insulated coop with a heat-lamp in one corner. I know that they have plenty of room, so I am not sure why they are pecking again. It is just one chick that they pick on and it looks like they are just plucking the new pin feathers that are coming in. I had some Nustock on hand, so I added some blue food coloring and put that on the places. If that doesn't help, I will have to go get some BlueKote, TSC was out the last time I was in there.

And a picture of them when I checked on them for the last time before going to bed.... See, plenty of room, and this shows only 1/2 the coop or so.

It could be a mineral thing. Have you tried offering them some liver? Or a chick supplement? Or scrambled egg? Some people say alfalfa is a good source of minerals when birds pick, but I'm not sure how that works with wee chicks.

I will have to pick up some liver to try.... I did put some scrambled egg out the day before yesterday, but they didn't touch it....

A red brooder light is supposed to help, too.
The light is red... I took the photo in B&W, because it was funky trying to see them in the red....

You fooled me with adjusting the color on that photo! We had one breed of hatchery chicks in the first batch we bought that were persistent pickers. They lived in the naughty cage until they turned on each other. Then they went to another farm, where they continued to eat each other ... so they got eaten. I've never had a bird resist scrambled egg! They go nuts for it. I conclude your birds are defective. ;)

Shew, I think so too! My aunt isn't having much trouble with the 23 she got... they pick at the downy feathers, but haven't brought blood....
