Hi, I found this site because "google" kept suggesting it for chicken information. I love how much information there is all in one place. We are very excited about our chicks. We live in Indiana, we have 4 kids, 6 cats, 1 bunny and now a flock of chickens :)

My BF brought home 1 baby chick the other night & after asking questions here I leaned we shouldn't have just the 1 RIR...that she needed friends. After reading about the breeds we decided to go to the Orshlins & get 4 chicks. One for each of the kids....but we came home with 7 instead. They are doing great, the kids LOVE them!!

We have:
Tumbles our RIR
Lemondrop a Buff Orpington
Matilda a Plymoth Rock
Bemo a black Australorp
Liberty an Americana
and "no name", Fiona & Fudge our 3 Easter Eggers.

We hope to begin our coop this weekend....as soon as I finish going through everyones designs on this site!!

Any advice would be welcomed, we are looking forward to these funny little additions to our lives.

Thanks,
Tumbles

Congratulations on the chicks! I love the names!

Thank you!!
The kids each named their own chicks. We let them pick the one they wanted (after I got them at the store. Taking 4 kids to look at 875639 chicks would have been to much!!), I showed them pictures of what the chicks would look like when they grew up & said the EE were surprise chicks bc who know what they'll look like & said there was a "secret" about them. They each picked their chicks & are very excited to watch them grow & eventually to see what their eggs look like (the secret about 4 of the chicks).

Everyone will help plan, design, build the coop and pick our coop "name".

I'm really hoping they all get very interested....I'd like to see some involvement with 4-H down the line :)

I have not been so excited about something since being pregnant!! I am in LOVE with these chicks!!

That is fantastic that you are making it into a whole family experience. That is how it should be. Good luck to you and your family on your new chicken adventure.

Matilda is a Barred rock.

I was reading through the breeds section and wanted chickens that had a tendency to be friendly so my kids could be involved, did well in the cold, and were pretty. All the chicks have been handled & our little RIR, who had time time alone with us wants to sit in our hands. As soon as she sees a hand in the box, she runs over & gently pecks until you let her claim her spot. The Buff Op seems a bit nervous but curious. She watches, plows through (...seriously, she PLOWS through, beak down) the other chicks to get close...but won't hop in the hand yet. The Americana & the Austroloupe (sp) are warming up the quickest.

Tumbles (RIR) runs to the side of the box & pecks as soon as she hears someone come in the room, once she sees you she kind hops hops a bit. LOl...they're all very cute. They all get along great, no one sits alone. They kind of huddle together, on top of each other...or they're in 2 groups. One group where the heat light can hit them, the other group away from the light.
