My Prim, a year old Buff Orpington, has developed a mass on the top of her head. I thought at first that it was just a fluid filled cyst (thought maybe the rooster bit her on the head and pulled her skin a bit), but it has been about 3 months and it has gotten bigger and more firm. It is at least half the size of her head now. I don't have any pics of it, but I can try to get some. Any ideas??

I did get an image from the front and back. She's one of our least tame chickens as well, so she doesn't like having her photo taken, let alone picked up much to closely examine, unfortunately. She also didn't like it when we did put her in the garage in the hospital cage (completely restless and tries to get out when putting in food and water), so we put her back in the coop. It seems to have possibly shrank a bit in size since taking these pictures a few days ago, but definitely still a lump on her head. No new scabs or blood at least, so we'll see if feathers start growing back.

A very sad outcome, I am afraid... My Primmy died during surgery to remove the mass. It was most definitely a tumor, and it was growing, so I didn't have any choice but to try to have it removed, but I can't help but feel like I caused her death. She was my favorite, my mama chicken, and I wept like a small child when she died... I still miss her.

Sorry for your loss. I wouldn't feel bad about trying to help her because the tumor would likely have killed her eventually.

How is your hen doing? Her tumor look like it covers her left ear. Has it grown since this picture?

The mass was pretty stable for quite awhile. It seems to be a solid mass, including the surface healing with a small hole in the skin exposed to the mass. However, the past few days now, the area between the mass and her left eye seems be getting more puffy and soft again. She's still otherwise acting normal and I believe still laying. (Though she's our only EE that lays a brown egg, so hard to differentiate for sure as her egg color is similar to a few other varieties we have. With her, we have 7 laying hens at the moment, but haven't had 7 eggs in a day for a long time. So if she is laying, its not every day, but we don't get a green egg from our other 2 EEs every day either.)

Since she is so skittish, we're just going the route to wait and see. We certainly care for our chickens, but avoid naming them to get too attached. So not quite a pet that we want to do expensive surgery on, even if we could find a vet willing to. And with her temperament, I really don't want to attempt it myself. If her condition changes further and appears to be suffering, we'll re-evaluate our options.

Oh boy! Please look at my post titled "bumble head?! 8 week old pullet" let me know if your hens head looks similar
