Hey everyone. So A couple weeks ago my Jake injured his toenail somehow, I found him with half of it just gone and a bit of the core exposed. I brought him in, stopped the bleeding, put some blue kote on it and put him back out. Well, it didnt help because for 2 weeks and still going he pecks violently at his toe until its bloody, round away from it like it's not supposed to be there, and just... cant relax. So I took him to the nearest avian vet.

Vet looked at it and said the skin around the toe was dead, most likely from the toenail trauma. He told me to try and keep it unwrapped unless he creates sores (he does) and soak him once a day and help rub the dead tissue off. So now I soak him once a day for 10 mins or more, take him out, help him pull off the dead skin and then spray with vetericyn, put on triple antibiotics with no pain killers, and wrap it. But it doesnt seem like its helping at all. I don't see the dead tissue anymore but he still acts the same. I go back October 3rd to the vet for a check up, but do any of you have any ideas?

This is the first time I soaked him. Tissue is dead. I helped him pull it off.

Last night I soaked him again and got what I thought was the last of it off. but hes still scared of it and ripping it apart. I feel bad for him, any ideas?

It's probably causing him pain, so he's trying to stop whatever he thinks is causing it. I don't think you can stop him from reacting that way. Hopefully when it totally heals he will stop it.

I hope so. I've been giving him a crushed up baby aspirin in applesauce at least twice a day to try and help soothe it. Maybe I'm just overly worried, but I just want him to get the dead stuff off so he can heal properly >_<

Heres the pics after the soak we just did

Turkeys are goofy creatures. Poultry in general will do odd things when in pain. They back away, turn in circles, high step, and peck and gnaw at stuff.

Whenever I have a turkey with a wound they do peck to clean at it, so he may be doing some version of that. Turkey logic isn't always sound. :)
