I was going to post this in the turkeys section but I think that here more people raise for meat. I have 5 Broad breasted whites, they are 3 weeks old and lately I have noticed them eating their own poo. They dont eat all of it of course but I have noticed them pecking at fresh dark brown sticky poo.
Ques 1: Is this type of poo normal for young turkeys?

Ques 2: Is it normal for them to peck at eat and eat it

?

I don't think they lack any minerals or whatsoever, they are on turkey starter crumbs at the moment.

Please Help!!

It comes from the wild variaties of Turkeys, From a young age the eat poo to get the undigestied food.

It also helps with Wild turkeys, as it passes some immunity from the adults to the poults. (I didn't think this up, several of the people who visited ouir wild life habitate told me this).

Turkeys can be very good scavangers when it come to food, and this is one method they use.

wow ~ our turkeys did the exact same thing for about 1-2 months. the fresher + gooey the better and they would all come running to get the poo. they slowly quit doing it.

I too was worried for their health but they have matured into lovely big birds with no health probs.

the main thing we noticed was as we got them out free ranging the poo eating seemed to resolve about that time. not sure if that was coincidental ~ boredom? harder to find the fresh poo in all the vegetation? just a phase as others said to build their biological flora and immune system? have no idea why and what cause our turkeys to do that too. I guess in the end it did not cause them any harm to eat their own feces.?
