I put my eggs in egg cartons pointy side down then flip the eggs 3-5 times a day. I have Hovabator 1588’s. I have had success with this in the past. But I have been reading that it is better to have them in an automatic turner and leave them pointy side down. Is this true? Should I buy a turner? Will I have better results?

I've done it the way you are talking about. I think that is OK.
The reason I asked about still or forced air is that the technique you are using wouldn't be good in a still air due to thermal stratification. The high eggs could get too hot and or the low eggs may be too cool depending on where your thermometer is. In an egg that is laying down in a still air, the top of an egg could be 2 degrees F higher than the bottom of an egg so with the egg carton on the side there could be a 3F difference between the high eggs and the low eggs.
