Hello thanks for stopping in. Looking to determine gender on two birds for my hopeful six bird flock.

First up is a Ameracuana at 17 weeks.

Second is a Speckled Sussex at 12 weeks.

I'll go grab some face shots too.

Thanks for the help

At 17 weeks, a cockerel's comb would be very pronounced and red, and the male saddle feathers would be very obvious. And they are both Easter Eggers. A Speckled Sussex is a dark red with white 'speckles' throughout with white/pink legs and feet.

Alright.

I can see 2nd bird not being a Speckled, but what would make it an EE. Just questioning all my birds now. Thanks for the input :)

The pea comb, muffs, beard, and yellow legs and feet with a green tint. Anytime you buy Ameraucana from a feed store, they are Easter Eggers. 90% of hatchery Ameraucanas or Araucanas are also Easter Eggers. Ameraucana are rare, so they usually cost a lot more than your average chicks. Also when they start laying, you will most likely get green eggs.

This is my 16 week old EE cockerel. His comb, neck feathers, and saddle feathers are completely different from your girls.

Well her is the rest of the gals.

Yeah that is drastically different. Should i call the store about the breed mix up...especially the sussex?!!

Feed stores often can't recognize what different breeds look like as chicks. And sometimes the people unpacking the chicks, don't even know what was ordered. My local feed store once labeled black sexlink pullets as barred Rocks and Silver Laced Wyandottes as Silkie Wyandottes. The girl working that day also insisted that the bantams were sexed pullets. The hatchery they source from doesn't sex any of their bantams.

Silver laced Wyandotte
Can't really see the comb, but might be a blue Wyandotte or an Easter Egger.
I have no idea what this one is. Might be an Easter Egger or a very badly marked Spangled Orloff.
Barred Rock

1st was sold as a Silver Wyandotte

2nd as a Blue Wyandotte Has a black beak. Is last one out of the hen house First one back in.

3rd is a Buckeye. Thinking it truly is. starting to get the black feathers.

4th Yup Barred Rock. She's 17weeks like the EE I had questioned.

The other four are twelve weeks.

Both the wyandotte are plump gals. The Buckeye, and both EE are skinnier gals.
