I have two 17++ week old buff Brahmas I got as 5++week old pullets, and six other 12 week old pullets (2 BRs, 1 Black X, 3 Hatchery Araucanas) They have been together for the last ~10 weeks.

My question is about how during the day they flock together, at night when the 12 week olds go to the highest roost in the coop, the 2 Brahmas cuddle together on the floor of the coop in the corner. They also never go up on the roosts. There are a series of roosts with no more than 16" to jump per level of roost.

I know the Brahmas are inseparable (the other one calls out if you pick one of them up) and they'd be together. I also know they are slow maturing and get real big eventually. But with the extra ~6 weeks on them how come they can't/don't go up on the roosts.

Is this a Brahma thing? Is it a they are not part of the club thing?

Also will they ever get up on a roost? The Brahmas didn't do it when they were only 5 weeks and don't now, do they need to get bigger, but eventually will they get too big to get up? Some of the others started going up at 3 weeks to check me out or look out a window, the others have been roosting at night for weeks now (maybe since they were 6 weeks old.)

(Of note they both seem healthy and fit. I'd gotten two other pullets with them so they wouldn't be alone if they didn't flock with the later birds, Wyandottes, but one was a roo sent to my brothers in the country and the other wasn't well I think when purchased and died two weeks later.)

I dont have Brahmas but I do have a large Splash Orpington cockerel that is now 18 weeks. I got him 2 weeks ago and had a 2 level perch. Lower was about 8" off ground and top was 18" higher. I had to put a middle roost in at 6" higher than lowest roost because he is too heavy to get to top. Dont know if this helps you but good luck. I like the idea of placing them on the roost, they may just be afraid.

I have a buff lace Brahma, she is at LEAST 8 mos old. huge, never has gone to roost. sleeps on the floor, while my large golden lace brahma does roost. The buff has not had an egg either, will she get in the hen boxes if she wont fly up on the roost?
