In another thread, where I asked about my small "flock", a few people said we may have a Cuckoo Marans roo:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=2502382

This was based upon the fact it has more white in it's barring. I have seen many photos of Cuckoo Marans and some roos look identical to someone elses pullets...which in turn look like mine.
This morning. we decided that if he was a roo then we would have to rehome him due to our urban location...but we would want a replacement. We went back to the farm and got what we think is now definately a Cuckoo Marans pullet, based on the info we found here. We have decided to keep the lighter Marans just in case they aren't a roo.

These two chickens are from the same batch of Marans. The darker one has smaller feet, maybe slightly thinner legs and more prnounced tail feathers.

The pullet:

If it is a roo how hard are they to keep? Are Marans roos noisy?

Cheers,

The dark one is pullet.
without knowing the age, I am not sure about the light one. I dont see hackle or saddle feathers, but that could be because of age. By the size of the wattle and comb , if its a pullet , it should be laying, or just about to .

Hi,

Sorry, forgot to mention they are 8-9 weeks old. Also, they are English Cuckoo Marans I think.

The light one has picked on the dark one a few times and I have had to lock the light one up as punishment.
Would a rooster attack a pullet?

I'll take another pic tomorrow in natural light.
What are Marans roos like? Are they quiet?

He's definately a roo...he's grown loads in the last few weeks. He's massive...large defined red comb and wattles...and he's clearly the boss of the RIR and Marrans poulet. The small bantam cochin however stands up to him and takes no stick what so ever yet never tries to assert it's dominance in the pecking order...the cochin is neutral...never pecks/attacks others, none of them peck/attack the smaller bantam cochin. Quite amsuing to watch such a small chicken stand up to the huge marrans that's about 4 times the cochins size
