I had a hen that I thought was broody sitting in the nest boxes in the coop. She was just under a year old. Sunday morning my little girl found her dead in the coop yard. We couldn't find any trauma on her so we assumed it was a fluke. This afternoon I came home to find one of my other hens dead (same nest box - although we have 15 to chose from). She was about 1.5 old and no trauma on her either. It is SW FL and it is hot but I have large openings on all 4 sides of the coop and two electric fans to circulate the air.
We are all very sad as these girls were two of our original chicken pets. I just thoroughly cleaned (disinfecting and spraying down) the coop at the beginning of summer. I replaced the shavings from the floor and the hay in the boxes last Friday. I am at a loss of what this could be! Could a spider be doing this? We have brown and black widows as well as a host of other nasty critters.
