Two month old Red Star, weird injury to base of wing

Hello. Our 2 month old Red Star is smaller than the other 6 chicks of the same age. She has always been the calmest of the group and stand-offish from the others. Today while moving them all into a bigger coop, I saw that the base of her left wing, where it meets her body, looked horrible. Not like the usual pecking-order injury, but something I've never seen before.

I moved the other chicks into their new coop and put together a separate coop for this injured one. It's a dog crate that I've wrapped 3/4 with towels to keep the wind out, and 1/4 open so she can get some sunshine. She has her own water and food, and plenty of it. She and the other chicks just came off medicated grower crumble this week, and are now on layer crumble. All the chicks get fruit & veggie scraps and the occasional dried mealworm.

If this is a usual pecking injury, then I'll keep her separated until she heals & grows bigger. If anyone thinks this is something else, please let me know.

Thank you.

From what I can see in the photo, I think it's possible that it could be the result of pecking, as you suspected. Something like Pick-No-More may also help deter others from picking at her feathers - additional enrichment may also be helpful to keep them distracted. 🙂

Best of luck!

Thank you @FoodFreedomNow ! I didn't know about that product. I hope you're right. I'll keep her separated for a while, regardless.
