A friend gave me 12 chicks about 12 weeks ago. It turned out that there are six hens, five roos, and the jury is still out on one. It hasn't crowed OR laid an egg yet. I knew I would have to rehome most of the roosters, didn't want to, I love 'em all. but a friend told me about a local old time farmer who would take roosters just because he loves them (and not eat them which is the best case scenario for me). I tried calling him for a couple of days but had yet to speak to him. My friend said just take them over and drop them off! I couldn't do that. so I did take them over today and this lovely elderly farmer
with a twinkle in his Paul Newman blue eyes was sitting under a tree having his lunch. I told him who I was and who I had in the back of my car, 2 twelve week old Araucana roosters. He said with a slight smile, "well, let 'em out!" so I did, and the two boys looked so confused and scared. They are used to being in the pen or the coop. I would love to free range but we have too much forest and I would be devastated if any of my babies got eaten. So my two boys are in a totally new environment and situation with tons of new friends. Can someone please let me know they will be all right?
I know it's probably silly but I do worry even though there were lots of pretty young girls for them. Will the current chicken residents show my boys where to sleep and where to get food? The farmer told me that I could come visit them any time I wanted and that made me feel a little better. I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance that instinct will kick in and they will know to hang with their new friends.
