I am at a loss what to do. I have a small flock of 5 hens (aged +1 year) who appear to be pretty healthy, except ...
Two of my hens are plucking out their own feathers. Both of these hens are Barred Rocks. None of my other hens are doing this. This behavior has been going on for about 3 - 4 months. I sneak into the coop at night and put blue kote on their backs, but it seems like they just keep picking at their backs. We are in the middle of a heat wave and it seems to have gotten worse in the humid, hot weather.
They eat Nutrena NatureWise Feather Fixer pellets which is very high in protein. I regularly give them fruits and veggies. I also give them left over bread and cookies and such occasionally, so they eat pretty good. They don't have mites or lice or any bugs that I can tell. I clean the coop regularly and use diatomaceous earth in the nesting boxes.
I have attached pictures of the hens. I tried to get up close but one of the girls is broody which made it much easier, but the other one is another story.
Any ideas? Do they make cones of shame for chickens? I just want them to stop before blood is drawn.
