We have two young ones (8 weeks old) that have hidden themselves in our massive wood pile and I can't get them out. Heck I can't even see them but I can hear them. We've been all over the pile crawling and digging but can't get to them. Normally I'd write them off and "you got in there, get yourselves out" but they are special to us. One of them is Phoenix (my special girl) and the other is Hold You who is my 23 month old daughters best friend who she carries around the yard saying "hold you peep" over and over. We've hung a chem-light out a ways for them to see and hopefully head towards. Is there anything else we can do to lure them out?

I can attack the wood pile tomorrow with a chainsaw but it might not be the best course of action.

Thoughts?

They may have been scared by something and further frightened by your efforts to get them out. A trick I have used for similar situations is to place an adult rooster near the hidden juveniles then provide him with an excess of quality eats (meal worms or grasshoppers work great) and he will give very strong tid-bitting calls that call even scared birds back.

Oh bummer!

Sounds like a brush pile rather than a split wood for the stove pile?

Hope they can get themselves out and/or the rescue doesn't turn into a recovery.

I've always found food to be a great motivator. Feed others in the flock near the brush pile and when the chicks get used to it, they'll slowly join in and reintegrate into the flock.
