Hi, we're new to chickens, hoping to pick up our first ones this Sunday at the swap in Knox, IN. Can someone please tell me the best type of feed for baby chicks? We're going to be going to a feed store tomorrow morning to pick some up so that we're all set and ready to go on Sunday. Thanks!

I was using a starter feed from Tyndale and my chicks did --- just alright but then I switched them to Purina start and grow and they are growing sooo much better. They really feathered out nice and doubled in size very quickly. I do not think that my start and grow is medicated though and I know it does not say medicated on the bag. You can go to the www.betteranimals.com site which is Purina and read about the different feeds they make for poultry there. Trudy

If you stay away from medicated you will have to be relentless on keeping the brooder clean and the litter dry.

A 21 percent protien feed is a minimum to help with their fast development.

This might throw her off a bit. I don't know. The Purina Start and Grow which people seem to like (and which I am using) is only 20 percent protein.....

Seems okay, though....

My chicks are 2 weeks old today and have been fed NON-medicated starter so far. I am bringing them home tomorrow and would like to put them on medicated starter.

Is there any concern in simply filling their feeder with the medicated starter?

Even though they are now 2 weeks old, will being on medicated feed now be enough to help prevent coccidiosis?

I only have 4 chicks in total, all are Patridge Chantecler and it took forever to locate the breed and obtain them! I am anxious to not lose any!

Thank you for any help.

I would find a local feed store one that is close to you that sells a well known brand, and I am sure they will help you with a chick starter. You will need no less than a 20% protein.
