Uh Oh..we got a bear!

Worriorchild I know you've read my thread where they killed 2 of my pullets. & yes we've had them up in Vernon break into a basement & it was *in the house* I'm not sure how it got in but I don't think it was sliding glass doors but a window if I understood it correctly. Prior to that a bear came into another house because it could smell the cooking port chops in the kitchen & the family dog stood it's ground long enough for the family to get upstairs where they called police as the *children got to hear their dog mauled*. When the cops got there this bears was still inside ransacking the house (kitchen) & so it was considered an attacking bear & they shot it. The very next day there was the bear people on the front lawn protesting the killing. And well I know I don't have to tell you the rest of the stories because you must have heard them.

All I know is that I can scrub the grill & garbage cans till I'm blue in the face but there's nothing there they're coming to the kitchen or where ever they smell food next. It was but for the grace of God that day they got my pullets that it wasn't someone's peitie 5 yr. old kid in the back yard playing...

Wow, I knew NJ was funny with their bear laws, but I've heard the population is really growing there too. They should have more hunts. I'm so sorry to hear about your losses.

So far, no new signs of the bear, so hoping he was just passing through. The corn is pretty much gone so the sweet juicy snacking is done for now. I hope he moved up into the briars where the wild berries should be in full bloom right now if they haven't been picked clean from the songbirds. Or maybe he found a mate up on the mountain and is busy with that. Wishful thinking I guess.

LOL Jody we can only hope for the "getting interested in mating" thing. The situation in NJ is the single most dangerous thing I've ever heard of. I mean stories that would durl a persons hair. For example we had this *huge 700 lb male bear* that was just all over a particular area wrecking havoc everywhere! I believe he's the one that yanked the door off the fridge in that house our friend owns. Anyway the cops had been called many times on him & so they are the ones that will go out & try to recondition the bears usuing those rubber bullets which is what they were going to do. When they spotted the thing however they could see the bear was hurt with it's front paw ripped real bad & almost completely torn off so they call in the DPWF&G who used the tranquilizer gun, then comes a vet from in town who performs surgery on it reattaching the paw on the spot & they wait for the thing to wake from the tranquilizer &/or drugs from surgery & then shoot it with the rubber bullet to get it moving on it's way..... Mean while we now had a 700 lb black bear who HAD to have been in pain from the surgery & more than likely ticked off at the people he thought caused it running through the streets of the neighborhood they'd performed the surgery in.... The area here is fairly rural with pockets of neighborhoods & not the "newark" everyone pictures NJ to be. It's more like lower NYS.

The bear hunts they have been able to get passed for approval here were seen with such opposition that the governer overturned it the last time so it had been voted in & then canceled. The last bear hunt that did take place the bear people were there protesting & on the idea that the "hunters are more dangerous than the bears" they went in *dressed in bear fur* to prove their point that the hnters were going to shoot hikers/people in the park. I kid you not..... It seems these people want to use birth control as a means of controling the population of them.

We've got a few years before we can do it but yea we're looking to get the heck out of dodge here because it's only a matter of time before people are getting hurt & the family pets are really at risk especially any pet that's outside like in a hutch!

We had 2 bears (momma and a cub) in out NEIGHBORHOOD a few weeks back. Where I live isnt really rural...so we have no clue why they came here. The mom had been taged and came from mid-Florida..
The mom got a away but some IDIOT shot the poor baby bear in a field across from his house. They poor thing only weighed 25 lbs. :'( :'(

It must be the week for bear, I had cubs crying all weekend in the trees of my back yard. Mom misjudged and came on the same day as the big boar. She spent the time keeping her babies in the trees and trying to lead him away. This went on from Friday til this morning, I haven't heard the babies at all today, maybe he left or maybe he got them who knows. I have bear here all the time, I go on the order of leave me alone I leave you alone. But I tell ya to hear those babies cry and watch her leaving and coming back was heart breaking. Good luck with your bear problems, the male has been coming for 5 years now and the female with cubs for 4. I am not sure how many cubs she has this year as her 3 from last year would of moved on. I know one thing I was very carefull to stay out of her way and those babies. I also made calls to all neighbors and let them know what was going on. Needless to say nothing much got done outside this weekend.

I know this may sound strange, but fight fire with fire. I am not sure if this will work, but animals don't like the smell of other predators---so I know that zoos used to make the animal waste available...The Philly Zoo may have some one to talk to about getting some-- Zoo poo. Then there is a natural repellant that will keep the bears away. As long as there are no loose lions and tigers, they won't be attracted. In any case--I hope that you, your family and dogs and chickens are safe...

They charged a guy in town because he shot a bear that was in his house, and had come over a 6ft fence and was after his lab, something to that effect. THEY ARRESTED HIM!! Yea fish and game or any other agency is the last I would be talking to. I think I will offer free coffee and pie if you shoot on my property on the next bear hunt. I think that is our only hope!THere is nothing we can do here we just have to suffer!! BEAR SURGERY UGH!!! How many needy people are in need of surgery. We are moving soon, PA maybe, mostly due to taxes though! over 11,000!!

Well of course the taxes are so high with all the birth control for wildlife we're going to have to be supplying.... LOL And you don't want the bear hunt on your property because with the hunt comes the bear group protestors.

I kind of feel sorry for the DPOWF&G because they really do try to keep a balance & that was the original reason they outlawed them being hunted to start with (back in the 1960's) now that they need to turn it around because the numbers of them are so high the rights people are just all over the place causing havoc. We had some guy over here shoot a bear that had tried to break into his kitchen & because of the location of the bullet they'd thought he shot it as it was running away. The bear group harrassed him like you wouldn't believe, driving by his house yelling things out & throwing garbage at his house. etc. He was really just trying to protect his wife & baby daughter, but there's no reasoning with the extremists. Another man was mauled when his dog was being attacked in the back yard. Luckily the guy didn't die & the bear group people were on TV saying that it was his own fault for going after it. LOL If it was either of my golden retrievers being attacked there's no way I'm not going to come to their defence... I guess to them we're only suppose to protect the wild animals? I'll just never understand it and I am an animal lover.

I hope he did not pass through to my house!!! Since I am right around the corner from you. I have not seen any bears in the farm behind me but have seen them crossing 309! Just another thing for me to worry about!! And I though the hawks and that one mountain lion were my biggest problems
