Let us start here:

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? OMG yes!!! I brought 6 home yesterday.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 6 but I want to try and pick up more tomorrow. Is this bad? Am I already addicted? I'm worried.

(3) What breeds do you have? We have 2 Easter Eggers and 4 SLWs. And BOY was it funny when I went to pick those up. I got it now. WINE-DOTS.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Google is my friend

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Horses. Dogs.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a DH, A ten year old daughter, 4 Lipizzan horses, 5 Belgian Malinois, and 2 whippets. ;-) Oh and two pygmy goats for 4H. I am a Veterinary Technician, as well as a Dog Trainer. My husband and I both compete with the dogs in a sport called "schutzhund' which basically takes all our time and money and gives us pretty trophies in return.

Ok. After 11 years on 3 acres, we finally decided, WHY don't we have chickens. So...we got chickens. And I have pictures. We already have a chicken coop, so I will need help refurbishing it since it has sat empty (except for Black Widows) for close to 20 years.

I have 6 chicks, all straight run. So I will be guessing on my Roos since I don't want one. I have insomnia as it is, cock-a-doodle-doo is NOT in my future I hope.

BUT, I already want to go pick up more chickens, this time Black Sex Links. We can at least call them SHE right???

Anyways, I am sure I will have TONS of questions. :)

I see the addiction took, lol, you want more and more chickens. No one will dissuade you here. Nothing but enablers. Wow you have some neat animals. I especially like Belgian Malinois - since seeing "Bear" on my favorite tv show " Person of Interest'.

Nice to meet another insomniac. With your background you are a great asset here.

Bear is a cool dog, always nice to see the Malinois well represented.

I had to hold off on buying my new chicks! Had to drive husband and his Malinois to LAX (200 miles round trip) because they are leaving for the midwest for a big competition. HOWEVER, our daughter I guess is sick! So I just spent 4 hours in the van with a ten year old vomiting into a dog bowl.

We are back home now and she is in bed. I might run down later on when I buy hay for the horses.

Welcome to BYC from El Dorado County wine country in the Western Sierra Foothills!

...at least there was a handy dog bowl.... :/. Hope your DD feels better soon.

As Diva said, you got the chicken addiction all right. BSLs are a good work-around against roosters but hopefully you've got some pullets in your six straight run chicks. I like a mixed flock, myself. They're so much fun to watch in the yard.

Oh - once your chicks are a bit older, they will keep that coop free of spiders, even the black widows. Bug predation is one of the reasons I got my first chickens. Now it's hard to find bugs for my flock because they are on the job all the time - you should see the rush when I find one or another chicken finds one.

Thanks everyone!

I DID run down and pick up 4 BSL. So now we have ten chicks. ;) I am SO hoping they eat the black widows. I was going to post a thread about it, hoping they don't get sick when they eat them. Also, I'm sure I will be posting tons of pics of my first 6 so you guys can help me figure out what I have. ;-)

Daughter is still a bit off, but not as bad as this morning, whew. We're taking it easy today, watching movies and playing with the dogs.

Oh! A picture of my young Malinois, for the earlier Bear lover....this is "Raptor" AKA Chuligan pod Cvilinem. He is a 21 month old import from the Czech republic.
