A long time friend has finally got me into poultry raising. I've been picking up ducks and chickens that other people don't want to deal with over the winter. As it turns out I have a lot to learn, but then my current standards aren't as high as my friends. He is a former champion Old English Bantam raiser and poultry judge. I certainly agree that breeding for a higher standard produces some beautiful birds, but I haven't found high quality birds being raised by the majority of backyard poultry people in Vermont that I've met so far.
I'm looking forward to developing some better stock and bringing in some new blood into this area. I know my chickens are culls but my ducks are some really nice birds that I'm sure the owner only had them for pond decoration and really didn't care much about them once he knew he'd have to feed them over the winter.

You should see some interesting changes in my birds over the long term and I'll share my stories as I get into this poultry world a little more.

Happy Thanksgiving to all,
