Hi newbie from the UK here :) I don't have any chickens right now and live in a first floor flat/apartment with a rather large balcony and I am contemplating raising a very small flock of bantam hens on my balcony... I have found a few decent sized coops that would fit and comfortably house 3-4 large hens... now I'm looking at the pros and cons and I know it will be more work but I'm sure its doable :)

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

How interesting! I guess you have to make do in certain situations. Anything is possible however. You would have to screen in the balcony so that they don't fall or fly off. The birds will need exercise and room to move. Make sure you don't over crowd them as chickens go off on each other when cramped, hot, wet, bored, etc...

Good luck and keep us posted on how all this works out! Welcome to our flock!

Would you have some part of a grassy yard for them to peck and scratch around outside of the coop? The serama breed takes confinement well and originated in Malaysia as house pets. My friend has 4 house pet chickens - 2 seramas and 2 silkies.

Hi :welcome from Yorkshire UK

Glad you could join the flock! I too agree with above posters this could work as long as your birds are not overcrowded and can't escape. I would just check with your rules on pets though to make sure you can keep them. It would be such ashame if you got started and then had to rehome them.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your new chicken adventures in the future.

Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

hi welcome from another newbie, i keep seramas in the house although they do go out with me and have a wander, very tame and super cut, i was out side watching chicken tv last night, my pullet that got scalped last week, wiggy, was chasing all the growers round and round the coop trying to get them in to roost, LOL wish i had my video with me, nearly wet me self laughing,
Hi yorkshire coop, do you have to give your polish hair cuts, i had one that almost starved its self as it couldnt see to find the food, gave it a hair cut and its fine again, so all polish have had their fringe trimmed, carolyn

Thanks for the welcome... I do have a large communal grassy area front and back... so I could put some kind of portable run down there for a couple of hours a day... would have to ok it with my neighbours but I'm sure if I offer them some free eggs they will oblige ;-) failing that my balcony is large so will become a very large run... My neighbours have walk in sheds, greenhouses and aviaries on theirs lol I could always plant a few large seed trays with grass, plant pots to forage in... I keep reptiles too and breed a number of livefood for them and could double up as a bug feast treat for chickens ;-) I used to keep chickens.. large chickens at my mums so not totally new to keeping chickens just new to keeping them in this way :)
