Umbilicus issue!

Chicks hatched/shipped Wednesday; got here yesterday. Everyone alive and very active.

Came down this morning and one of my BOs was a bloody mess. This is what I found:

This thing was connected all the way up to her neck!

I went ahead and soaked her in warm water to loosen it up. I went ahead and cut it off because her legs were getting tangled and then she'd tug and make it bleed more, etc. {And because there was one going after it and not leaving it alone, which was how we realized there was an issue, besides all the blood, of course. In a perfect world, I would have just left it alone.....}

This is what came off:

She's still a bit oozy, though.

I don't have a cauterizing stick, but I did coat her belly with blood stop powder. I may put some Blue Kote on there if I need to.

Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks!

I used to put a little antibiotic powder on raw navels. I believe I used a Terramycin type that normally you dissolve in drinking water. That way I figured the chick would have the help of antibiotics without an ointment making the wound staying soft & vulnerable.
But what you're using should prevent it staying too soft, too, it sounds like.

Ya, my main concern is drying it up and keeping an eye out for hernia. She's a big sluggish {and cold!} right now, so I moved her back completely under the heat lamp. I'll dropper her some water if she doesn't get up and get some soon. I hate it when someone isn't feeling well!

I think she's gone.

She had all this clear stuff come out her nose and now she's completely floppy and unresponsive. If she's breathing, I can't tell. Anyone know what that fluid was? It was clear and runny but more oily than water......

So very sorry you lost her! I'm glad she had someone giving her some TLC during her struggle.

I'm sorry I don't know enough to know what the fluid was. Maybe a search here on BYC for "chick clear fluid" might bring up some useful experiences from others?

Thanks. I've read on other avian stuff about clear liquid coming out of beak after death with the assumption that it came from the crop. I'll search here again at some point when I get time.

I'm still so surprised she survived shipping.:/
