As I mentioned in our profile, my husband and I moved out of the city and into the Idaho mountains about 5 years ago. Our dream was to build a small ranch together, where we could get our hands deep in the dirt and do work that is meaningful to us, and do it together. Well, these 54 acres were a HUGE project to take a bite into. We anticipated being able to get a lot more done faster (darn limits of time and money and energy...), but we are making our way through it and slowly building this place up. We have a sweet yurt that we rent out to folks, and we also grow produce and culinary mushrooms for our town's farmers market. Part of our big plan has always been having chickens and goats, but we weren't quite ready for them, until a local friend who was relocating needed to rehome her 9 chickens. So... we frantically built a coop and run and as of this morning, we are keepers of a small flock of full-grown layers. The last few weeks getting ready have been a crash course in chicken management - we've read books and articles on the forum, and now its time to see if we can keep these girls happy and healthy. So, to answer the forum questions....

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We got them today and are complete newbies.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Nine
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have two buff orpingtons, and i think an arcauna... and then other 6, I'm not sure their breed.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
TBD... So far, its that the chickens dont mind me singing at them. :)

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening and growing plants to sell at our farmers market. Mountain biking, hiking, and yoga when there is a bit of extra time.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have two dogs--a German wirehaired pointer and a border collie mix. We hope they will learn not to eat the chickens. My husband manages the ranch full time, I help part-time. I also work in marketing for a Seattle-based adventure travel company.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
Our neighbor who gave us the chickens recommended BYC! Thanks, Lorraine!

Thanks for the welcome! Got to clean up my first poopy butt today, so thanks to all the previous posts with recommendations. Think I'll have to pick up some birdy shampoo and a hairdryer...

I'm sure these are common - but any ideas what the two red-brown chickens are and the four black-greenish ones? I put stars above the birds breeds in question. (i'm not sure how i did that... but there are stars!)

Welcome to BYC. I’m not great at naming breeds and I’m having a hard time seeing the picture (I’m on my phone lol) but the reddish/brown looks a little like my Rhode Island Reds. Just an uneducated guess. Here’s a picture of mine.

The Black ones are most likely Australorp's.
