Unexpected Rooster

Your rooster doesn't really look rooster-ish. To confirm that suspicion, you need to look for gender specif feathers.

Something else that I just though of, with BSL, and GSL the males and females look different.
With that BSL, the males are barred. Going on this, you do not have a rooster.

I suspected one was a rooster. Well I am sure now it is.

I agree. You can clearly see the sharp hackle feathers. Some saddle feathers look sharp.

Will my hens go broody now? They are production red/black star cross.

Production Reds and Black Stars seldom go broody. They are bred not to. Occasionally one will but that is rare.

Whether a rooster is around makes no difference to whether they go broody or not.

I do not want to eat fertilized eggs.

Could you explain why? Some people have legitimate reasons for that, maybe religious. Or it may be a misunderstanding. I'm not going to do a lot of typing on this until I know why.

And how do I tell if they are?

This is an old thread but it might help you. If in doubt, post photos and we may be able to help you. But if you have an active male in your flock many probably are fertile.

I was thinking hen too. Reminded me of Henelope my barnevelder, maybe this one's a mix and late layer?
