I do OK with known breeds and the typical non pea combs when determining sex, but I ended up hatching eggs from what was supposed to be Bielefelders and I got a classic "barnyard mix" instead (though one cockerel is close to the right breed). I have one gray colored chicken at 17 weeks that I have no clue as to the sex, but I suspect is male. Thoughts? Thanks!

Probably female, based on the color of the chest feathers (if that color is all over the chicken, it doesn't mean anything. If that color is only on the breast, it almost always means female.)

Probably female, based on how small and pale the comb & wattles are.

Maybe female, based on the lack of male-specific saddle feathers (but the one with a big comb, pretty obviously male, isn't showing those feathers yet either, so it may be too soon to look for male feathers in these particular chickens.)

I would suspect a Bielefelder father and something else for the mother of that particular bird.

I agree with the consensus, she's a girly girl. At 17 weeks the comb and wattles are much paler than a healthy male's would be. And the brown breast feathers are a female specific color pattern.

Thanks everyone.

The reason I thought she was a he was because she acts like a cockerel and has a pea comb (which I have not had before). No crowing, but the obvious cockerel doesn't either because I think the other boys in the area keep him quiet. She'll tussle with the cockerel from time to time too, sorta like two boys going at it.
