One of our Silkies have developed a skin condition. Her head was once covered with feathers. Yellow patches on the skin as well as yellow clumps at the base of neck feathers. I bathed her and started a anti fungus spray. Am I doing the right thing? I don’t see mites at all. First photo is 3 weeks ago. Second is today 3/15/21

I am having the same problem with one of my silkies. My post tells what I've tried on her. Have you figured out a cure or what is wrong with her?

It could be scaly face mites, similiar to, but less common than, scaly leg mites. Treatment is usually ivermectin applied topically. If antifungals have not had any effect then I would treat for mites. More info here:

@SilkieSweet3 , I looked at your other post's pictures, it appears your bird has scaly leg mites also, so I would definitely suspect the face mites as well. If you have a vet that sees birds they can do a skin scraping and look under a microscope to positively identify.

Thank you coach,
Supposedly the first vet did a skin scraping of her facealmost two months and it was negative. But the tech told me that they did not get a good skin scaping, so I have no confidence in this vet office. --Hence the new vet.

I picked up some topical ivermectin this morning from my vet. Princess Buttercup started with what seemed to be a respiratory infection, then scabbing face, skin peeling of the rest of the body, and finally the scales of her feet. I read that this is how scaly face mites can present and progress. So I think you are RIGHT. I pray that this is it and that she will get back to normal soon. Thank you @coach723 😊

So this is day 14 after applying SCATT.
I followed the directions loosely. it seemed like the description of application was more for the thigh and leg area. I applied all around the top of the head behind the eyes and neck area down about 3 inches from the base of her head. this area was covered with a yellow crusty caked on material at the base of her feathers. During the course of daily soft cleaning most of all that caked on yellow material has disappeared. Directions call for 20 days between applications. I will reapply the head and face area. We also sprayed the coop and the run with “seven”liquid. I am including photos of how she looks now her skin is naturally dark.

I’ll be happy when she looks like this again and you can’t see her eyes. Honey is a “Splash” silky. She won best of show in the Sacramento area in 2013. She was shown by her previous owner from whom we purchase adult silkies.

Oh that is so sad. Can you tell whether the SCATT helped her? It is difficult for me to tell from the photos. I am following your post as my silkie is having a similar problem. I was going to get SCATT but it would be a while before I could get it. I talked to my vet and she prescribed ivermectin drops. This is day 3, so I haven't seen a lot of improvement yet. I also started bathing her with a vet prescribed antibiotic and fungicidal shampoo. Good luck with Honey.@gjfurtsch
