I had three broody chickens this past summer who hatched out at least four chicks each and after this past Monday, I have lost all but one of the chicks which were hatched, and the one that has survived is a rooster (which sadly, I do not need) 😩.
All of the pulleys were lost to disgusting predators (hawks) except the one I found Tuesday, who had died over night in the coop. I knew when I observed her in the run Monday morning that she was not looking well. She was all puffed up, tail drooping down. Sadly, my suspicions were correct and she was gone by the morning. 😢
I hope that my luck with broody chickens will play out again this spring and summer and I can actually produce a brood of pullets that will last to the next cycle of laying hens and beyond 🙏🏻

What color were the chicks you lost? I noticed my first year with broodies and chicks that only white/blue/etc. colors got taken by hawks and all the camoflaged chicks survived

Heavy vegetation also helps with this. Every year the plants grow more and less hawks can see my chickens

Where are you? I may take the roo. I’d rather not see him culled. I’m sorry for your losses, though.

That makes sense. My white chicken got taken by a hawk. Never had any predators get my other chickens, which are black and blue chickens mostly but I also have another white hen, a white & black hen, a beige & white hen, and a roo that is many colors:)
