Very sorry for your loss. At 8 months, it could have been a number of things that killed her. A necropsy through your state vet lab in CA is very inexpensive and would give you some answers. @BigBlueHen53 has given you the list of state vet labs to contact. Do you know if she laid eggs, or was ever bullied away from food and water by other chickens?
