Hi guys!
Hoping you guys can help me troubleshoot.
I have a 5 yr old Cochin that is exhibiting very strange symptoms. About a week ago I noticed a few birds sick and some bloody stool. Treated it as a Coccidiosis outbreak. Disinfected the coop, drenched everyone, etc. Within 24 hours all but the Cochin perked back up. I pulled her to quarantine and within 48 hours she was doing much better, but still lethargic/confused. So I continued on with treatment and isolation. A few days ago I noticed she stopped eating and drinking. My idiot thought was sour crop, but exhibited no signs of it. I kept her on meds/syringed water and could lure her to eat a little layer mash and bugs.
This morning she seemed worse than ever. I almost culled her, but decided if she would keep fighting I would too. On her 5th watering of the day, I felt it. Mushy chest. A part of me was relieved. I then heard the fermentation and knew I was right along, but she never showed! No signs of thrush or scent of sour yet.
I massaged her crop for 30 minutes (could feel the impaction) and gave her some olive oil. Placed her back in quarantine removing all water and food. Fingers crossed.
A few hours later I went back out to check… she had spilled all the crop contents all over herself. I then noticed she was… splayed out? Not paralyzed. But legs straight back (movable), wings flat, neck limp. I cleaned her back up, felt her crop and it was flat again.
I’ve never seen this stretched out thing though. I’ve handled sour crop plenty of times. Any ideas what’s happening? Should I be doing anything more? I feel bad I didn’t feel the crop before, but she had none of the signs. I know the chances of her survival are slim, but I’m pretty partial to this little lady.
No parasites or worms.
Not Mareks
Not gasping for air.
Not paralyzed, just fully stretched out.
