Someone dropped off a rooster in our barn yesterday. He was in a cage with a water dish and a note written with a computer covered in a plastic sleeve. It said, Hi My name is Little Mikey, I am needing a good homeand these two chicks ae cute. Can I stay? Can I huh, Can I huh, huh Can I. I adopted 2 rhode island red hens that are like our outdoor pets.
thyey're free range, get along with our dog and cat. I never wanted a rooster because of the stories I hear about how nasty they can be. And now I don't want to upset my sweet girls lives. What do I do, I want to honor the person who has trusted me with their rooster, but actually I don't want him. Will he get a long with my girls? Will it upset their world?

Since you seem somewhat inclined, you could give it a try and see how it goes. If he gets to be too much, Little Mikey will just have to be rehomed again, one way or another. How big is he? We have several sociable roos that free range with ours ...

LOL 2 choices...

Let your ladies have a man around to protect them...

or

Bye Bye roo

Not all roosters are mean and nasty...they are actually the minority. Roosters can be just as sweet and loving as the girls. Being as this roo is unknown to you...take it easy....try making friends with him first, check out his behavior and personality with you...then decide if you want to let him stay with your girls.

I have a little rooster that is friendlier than all my hens he is always following me and loves to be petted and has never showed aggresion. Not all are bad.

If you keep him make sure you keep him quarantined away from your girls awhile. Check him over good for bugs an such. He is probably fine but better to be safe than sorry...

You're a nicer person than I am to have respect & consideration for the person who dumped their unwanted rooster on your property. Was the cage actually IN your barn? Did you check to see if anything of yours was missing? I think this is rude, irresponsible, and cowardly behavior on their part.

Certainly quarantine this roo far away from your hens and practice biosecurity after tending to him. He just might be a healthy mannerly bird and be a delightful addition to your little flock. Too bad the jerks who dumped him in your barn didn't give you any more information about him and his history.

There are many reasons people decide to give away their roosters, among them are aggressive behavior towards people and other animals. In my opinion, you're under NO obligation to keep this bird if you really don't want him. You could just as easily give/sell him to someone else -- in person, of course -- and keep the cage for yourself as a bonus.

And being a dinner guest is not the worst thing that can happen to a rooster.

ooooh shoot, who ever did this put him right in the part of the barn where they are. He is still in the cage and I've been feeding and watering him in there, but he is in their area. Is this a really bad thing?

Thank you all for giving me help. I am a novice at this, and I hadn't thought about the fact that it was rude to just dump him off, my ego got in the way...thinking they wanted me to have him. So anyway, I should get him out of that part of the barn away from the girls and what are the issues that my girls could have from being exposed to him if he's sick??
