I brought Perdue to be operated on today. The doctor just called with the following news:

PERDUE HAS CANCER.

The small masses I was feeling were tumors (not eggs). The doctor was able to cut out a few tumors but could not get them all out as he said she would have died on the operating table had he been more invasive. He was going to spay her but could only get part of it out. She must have hormone injections every two weeks to try to stop her from ovulating and producing eggs. If she does produce an egg, it will be an internal egg. If that starts to happen, I will have to put her to sleep.

I feel he is the best avian doctor in NJ and I know he did his very best. He said she is not in pain and could perhaps live for months or even a year or two longer --- only the good Lord knows. Should I see her start to suffer, I shall do the right thing and have her put to sleep.

I will be bringing her home tonight. I am not sure sure how long she has left but I will make sure her last days on earth will be a good life filled with lots of love.

I have to say that although the operation was very expensive, Perdue was worth every penny of it and I don't regret getting it done. I love her too much and needed to know what was wrong and how to help her.

Thank you all for your suggestions and prayers.

I'm sorry to hear about what he did find, I was hoping for the alternative. But he did make the comment she could still enjoy a long life even with that diagnosis. My best wishes to you both. And yippe she made it through the surgery OK.

Now you get to obsess over an entirely different thing with her, that's so normal. It took me a year to relax a smidge after our dog's cancer surgery.

Thanks for updating us. I've been thinking of you. I'm so sorry for the diagnosis. She's a tough little chickie for making it this far and you're so good to her. By the way, I'm curious to know who your vet is. I'm in NJ and vets seem to be a rarety - except for dog & cat.
Best wishes for Perdue's recovery!
