Well, the girls were on lock down last night. What ever it was did come back. The run is all disheveled like it was searching for dinner. I have been weeding and I throw all my weeds in the run for chickens. We had dew last night and the leftover weeds in the run had footprints on them ..... where the dew was gone. The water was all muddy too. It was nice and clear last night. So now I'm thinking coon as well. No footprints or any other signs to give me a clue for sure.
The one RIR pullet that did return is still a bit skittish. My husband was upset over the loss as well. But we both agree that we learned a lesson and will be locking the girls down at night. We will also be reinforcing the run. Basically what we learned is this ..... Just because it has not happened in 4 years, does not mean it will never happen! I hope others learn from our mistakes as well. Lock up you chickens at night!
According to that site...my options are coyote, fox or a human.
Don't see how a coyote or a fox could break into a 6.5' tall rabbit hutch's top, get into the coop and take off with one bird, leaving the rest fine? Oh well...guess my other option is the one I'm hunting for now...humans...ARG!
