Hi community!

Started our flock on monther’s day this year with 5-7 day old “straight run” “rainbow” chicks from tractor supply after 2 seasons of “maybe we should have chickens?” Deliberations & lots of After it became apparent we were numbering more Roos than pullets, we picked up 6 more sexed leghorn pullets from tsc at a steep discount... bringing our young flock to 14 birds of various sizes and breeds between 6-8 weeks of age. We anticipate sending our Roos to “freezer camp” in about a month.

We’ve got them outdoors on grass/starter with a movable tractor/coop & they’re happy as can be! Would love any thoughts on what kind of birds my “rainbow” chicks may actually be 😂

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. My concern would be if a predator dug under your tractor it would get to the chickens. Or a larger pred would just knock the tractor over. Predators are very cunning and persistent

We thought of that- our main predator concern "in town" is raccoons- we shut the birds in at night in the coop at the back, it's got a solid floor & a pretty sophisticated latch... in addition to the latch on the heavy door of the coop. We're also mentally prepared for predator loss... the flock we had when I was a kid suffered a predator raid at least once per year. We also have our own "large predator" (our dog) who has been mother hen to these babies and routinely guards and pees around the coop!
