Howdy BYC! I have a broody polish who just hatched three chicks! I’m planning on moving them into a large rabbit hutch until the chicks are big enough to be with the rest of the flock, is this a good idea? I’m just concerned about the babies because the Mama has them out in the run right now and they can’t get up the ladder into the coop, and she REALLY wants to take them into the coop. Also, there were other eggs that she was sitting on that haven’t hatched yet. Should I toss them? The (hatched) babies have fully pooped out, so they must have hatched a hot minute ago. This is my first broody hatch. I’m having a major freak out!

The chicks are ready to be with the flock when their mother thinks so. I have never separated a broody and her chicks from my flock. And I have never had an issue.
Is it a ladder up to the coop or is it a ramp? A ramp would be much easier for the chicks to navigate. How much space is in the coop and how many other birds do you have?
Did you set all the eggs under her at the same time? A staggered hatch is an issue for broody hens. They generally like to get off the nest with their chicks about 24 to 48 hours after they hatch. Any unhatched eggs are abandoned.
Do you have the flock on a good quality chick starter, Flock Raiser or All Flock crumbles? The mother needs something appropriate to feed the chicks. You can keep a container of oyster shell on the side for the active layers.

I agree about keeping the chicks and hen with the flock if you can. Is there a way to modify the ladder into a gentle ramp? Otherwise maybe you can make a safe nest spot for mama at ground level until the chicks are older?
