I am a new chicken owner, so I am still learning. With that being said, I had a 12 week old hen die. I noticed her belly sticking out and her neck was a little crooked one day, but she was eating and drinking. The next day, I found her unable to move with her neck turned crooked. I thought it could be wry neck so I treated her with vitamin E but she got worse and passed. Then I noticed another chick staggering and making a growling type noise (I’m sure it was gurgling), so I immediately isolated him away from the rest of my flock. At one point, his legs were out in front of him. I put corid in all of my chicken’s water because someone said it would help. I also have put rooster booster in their feed as well. It has been about 2 days since I have isolated him, and he seems to be doing a little better and is even standing now, but he is still making the growling noise. Now, I have another chick I assume to be a rooster, that I can tell is having trouble breathing because I can hear him making a weird noise. He is still eating and drinking and running around. Does anyone know what this might be? Is it a respiratory issue? I am so frustrated and down about it all. Any advice would help. Thanks.

I need opinions on what to treat my chicks for. They are 13 weeks old this week. I had one with a big swollen belly one day and her neck was sunk in. The next day I found her on the ground with her neck twisted unable to pick it up. I thought it could be wry neck so I immediately gave her vitamin E but she unfortunately passed. Next, another chick I noticed was staggering and he was making a growling noise (I now think it was him having trouble breathing) so immediately quarantined him away from the rest of the flock. The next day his legs were out in front of him and he couldn’t stand. I was told to try and treat with corid, and I also put some rooster booster in his feed. He is now able to stand, and seems fine but still making that funny growling noise. Now, I have another chick I noticed making a raspy sound but he is still eating, drinking, and running around fine. I gave both chicks VetRX last night as well. I was told it could be a result of a vitamin deficiency. Does that sound right or could it be something else? If so, can someone tell me if I should be treating with antibiotics or something else. Thanks for your time!

I had a chick die that had a swollen belly and her neck was sunk in. The next day her neck was twisted and she wasn’t able to move. I thought it was wry neck so I gave her vitamin E. She later passed. I have 2 chicks that are making raspy growl like noises. One chick was staggering so I quarantined him, and now he is able to stand and eating and drinking good, but is still making the growling sound. His poop seems healthy also. My other chick sounds raspy but is eating, drinking, and running around. I am assuming they have some kind of respiratory sickness. I went and got some Premoxil 550 to put in all my chicks water. Someone at the feed store also gave me some pills with Premoxil 550 as well and said to give both chicks with the raspy/growling noise down their throat. They are 12 weeks old. Is it safe to give chicks pills down their throat? Does this sound like a respiratory illness? I also heard it could be vitamin deficiency. I am a new chicken owner and I am not sure what to do.

Sorry you lost your pullet. :hugs

Are your chicks on starter/grower feed? It sounds to me like vitamin deficiencies are occurring. The rooster booster is a brand name. Which product are you using? We use Poultry Cell mostly, sometimes Nutradrench.

Are all these chicks having issues 12 weeks old?

Where are they living, as in are they in a chicken coop now? What kind of bedding is in wherever they are?

This is the rooster booster supplement I am using. I bought it from tractor supply and it is supposed to have most all vitamins in it.
My chicks who are around 12 weeks old, are in a pretty big chicken coop that I built myself. They have been living in it since the beginning of May and have done fine. I did however, unknowingly add a few new chicks I got in there last week. I realize now I was supposed to quarantine them, and I deeply regret not doing my research.
I am not sure why 2 of my chicks are having breathing problems. The chick that I isolated, seems to be doing some better and is able to stand now. The other chick that is having breathing problems is eating and drinking fine but still making a weird noise breathing. I am not sure what to do. Can breathing problems still be related to a vitamin deficiency?
If it is a vitamin deficiency, I am hoping that rooster booster does the trick. Is there anything else you recommend I use?

Also their bedding is turf.

If you are treating them with Corid, don’t start them on vitamins until after you have finished treatment. Vitamin B1 interferes with Corid, making it less effective. But, what you’re describing doesn’t sound like coccidiosis. I agree with @Debbie292d, that it sounds like vitamin deficiency, and the right treatment would be Poultry Cell or Nutridrench. I hope things improve for your chicks soon, and I’m very sorry for your loss. 😞❤️

So can vitamin deficiencies cause breathing problems in chicks?

Also, the lack of Vitamin E can cause wryneck. You mentioned your chick had a crooked neck.

Vitamin deficiency can lead to secondary infections, like respiratory issues. @Debbie292d what’s your take on this?
Exactly what you said.

Vitamin deficiencies can lead to all kinds of issues.

Perhaps antibiotics may be needed if it is indeed a respiratory infection but most of the time my birds get over it themselves. They've had a sneeze or two here or there and I just give them vitamins and they get over it.
