My duck seemed to push some eggs out of the nest. I brought them in to check in case the accidentally just rolled out., but was having a hard time telling if there are babies. I have never done this before.

I had them on the counter and one rolled on the floor. There's blood and I hear a baby crying. I took the cracked egg back out to the duck. I don't know what to do. When I used the flashlight all I saw was black and an air pocket.

Is there anything I can do?

at this point i don't think there is a way to save it, it got cracked to early and is probably bleeding out. you could try to stop the bleeding and put it in incubator but at this point there is not a lot you can do if the crack is really small you might be able to let it hatch if its close to hatch date but other than that i don't really know I'm new so i may be wrong but from what i have read... I'm sorry hope it survives

I panicked and put it back out with mom. I just went back out to bring it back and I find that she has 4 or 5 babies that must have hatched today or yesterday. I tried to find the cracked egg and she was biting me and dad was in the way. I feel like a jerk for leaving them on the counter. I just saw black so I thought they were bad and they were not in the nest. Now I think they just rolled out when the dopey drake was going in and out.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! :hugs

Please don't beat yourself up! I have never hatched eggs before, and I probably would have thought the exact same thing. Mamas often push bad eggs out. But accidents happen. Heck, mama or papa duck pushed it out of the nest, right? So they dropped it, too.

In any case, congrats on your new babies! I am a crazy chicken lady, but baby ducklings are ridiculously cute!
:love

OUCH! Don't punish yourself too much, we all made painful mistakes from which we learned lessons. I myself haven't encountered this particular mistake yet, though I've made plenty of others in the past, but I'm pretty sure others here already have.

Now, if you heard the baby "cry" (tjirp), could it be that it had already internally pipped? Because what my experience tells me is that they only tjirp after they took their first breath of air. The blood though is not a good sign. When a vain pops they bleed to death pretty fast, sadly enough. That's why it's so important to not open the egg prematurely, even after the internal pip was established, unless you have no other choice. The chances you pop a vain are too high. One popped vain means 9 out of 10 the death of the chick. Sorry to bring the bad news. I still DO hope though that the chick will survive, the odds could be with this chick instead of against it, but don't leave it with the mother as the shell is already weakened and stepping on it would make things even worse. Ignore the hen and male's behavior, just dig into the nest (carefully) and put it in an incubator ASAP and hope everything works out in its favor. Don't forget to candle it (pipped internally?) and to check regularly for movement. Now that it's weakened - lets hope for the best and say it's not dead already - it might not have the strength to make it to the external pip due to the blood loss and/or shock. Then it might be a good idea to create a tiny safety hole in the air cell to start off with. But only if you see the internal pip. It even might need help to hatch all together. But give it a bit of time first, don't act too soon.

The only thing you can do is hope for the best. And like I said, don't beat yourself over it, sh*t happens to even the best among us.

Agree with the others.. Get it in a warm incubator asap.. Its the only chance. You will learn.. Mistakes are heartbreaking but we learn from them.. Nobody is perfect, not even the hens.. Chin up.. Just do what you can.. Do not beat yourself up.. Just dont.. Hugs.
