Help needed with sick duckling.. We had our first duckling hatch last night. He/She was pipping for 36 hours and when I talked to the farm who sold us the eggs, they suggested helping it out. It came out but umbilical cord was still attached to the egg and leg looks deformed. The umbilical cord detached pretty quickly but leg still not looking good and is covered with bits of shell and sticky and now hard yolk. Was thinking it would not make the night but it did. It has not stood up but is chirping loudly and is strong at times. Not sure what to do. Don’t want to prolong its misery if its not going to make it but want to give it a fighting chance also.

First off.... welcome to BYC.
Sounds like the yolk didn't fully absorb.
Can you post pictures of the little duck?
Do you have it in a brooder or still in the incubator?
If in a brooder, what is your set up like?

So per suggestion by another person, washed goo off with warm water. back in incubator. was just getting a brooder ( box, newspaper, wood chips, food and water) and heat lamp ready to go to put him in.
