Urgent Help needed with sickly duckling

Oh thank you for checking. The poor little thing died last night. We are so sad as we thought he was doing a little better. He was such a little fighter but I am thinking there may have been other internal issue also. Our eggs were a week late to hatch, the farm thought it may have been because the temp. was too cold. We did have a hard time keeping the heat regulated in the incubator . We live in Virginia and its been so cold even in the house. We finally put a heat lamp over the incubator to help. We are also so disappointed, we havent had a succesful hatching experience. We didnt have any other eggs hatch. One other one started to pip and then stopped and died. In your experience, can the time of year have an efffect?

I am so sorry!! low temperatures can cause internal issues as well as delayed hatches, so that could have been the case. Don’t be disappointed. You live an you learn, and you tried. That’s all that matters. If you decide to try incubating again, I think given the proper care, you will have little chicks that you can watch grow and that you can love. Drafts and big temperature swings can cause spikes and drops in incubator temperature, so it is always important to put it in a place were temperature stays mostly consistent.
I don’t have much experience in hatching during different seasons because I am only on day 8 of my very first incubation without using a broody hen.
Again, I am so sorry for your loss and I hope you will have better luck in future hatches. :hugs:hugs

Thank you! We have learnt from this experience and honestly are more in awe of nature than ever. Its amazing how a mama duck does this naturally.
It really is. And it’s beautiful to watch a mother and her babies. It amazes me that they know what to do and they don’t even read a pamphlet or search BYC for how to do it. It is so amazing.

I am sorry..:hugs
I hope the others can help you with hatching advice. I have more problems hatching when temperatures outside fluctuate, but we don't have air conditioning and we heat with wood stoves so it may just be my situation and not that way for most.
Wish you the best with future hatches!:fl

The electrolytes are a good idea. Leave it in the incubator for at least 12 hours to keep him dry like you were told to by the other people on the thread. If you are not near a tractor supply or local feed store. Sugar water can work in a pinch until you can get the electrolytes. I use the save a chick kind from tractor supply. Also turn his crumbles into flour in your blender. It should help him eat a little bit easier when he is ready. I would leave another new chick in with him. It seems to help. They will also teach him how to eat and drink so you don’t have to.
