So, to sum it up quick, I have a hen currently indoors due to frostbite damage to her feet and she's currently got lice I just noticed. Partially because I saw it on her head and partially because I just found two on me. She's a Rhode Island Red, not even a year old yet, and I also have two cats, two kids, and a husband.

Help???? I am panic.

Lice may get on you temporarily, but they usually remain on the chicken. Chicken lice do not become human lice fortunately. Go to you r local feed store and get some Gardstar or Prozac or other brand permethrin dust. Put some in an old sock and dust her. Repeat dusting her at 10 day intervals. The dust kills the live lice, and since the lice eggs hatch about every 10 days, they have to hatch for the permethrin to work. Permethrin 10 concentrate, usually Martins or Gordons brands, can be purchased in small bottles and mixed with water 1 tsp per quart of water in a spray bottle or gardens sprayer, to spray bedding, facilities, coops and nests. New bedding should be used and old bedding removed.

But doesn't it cause mange in cats? The lice, I mean.

Mange is from a microscopic mite. Chickens can have lice or mites. Mites in chicken cause anemia because they suck the blood. Lice feed on the skin, scabs and parts of feather. Here is some reading about the different kinds of lice and mites:

Good news! Lice are species specific. They will not parasitize people or cats. Obviously you still need to treat all your chickens, but you don't need to worry about your family or non-avian pets getting lice from your chicken.

Thank you. I tend to panic because I completely confuse myself when I try to do research, and then I started to worry for Noir, a tripod cat, and Wisp, an elderly cat, as well.

Oh. Thank goodness. I tend to panic and both cats tend to be prone to something happening to them health wise.
