When people say they use crates for nest boxes, do you mean the plastic milk crates? Do you line the sides or bottom with something? Do you stand them on the side or ruight side up (opening on top)? I'm liking this idea more and more. Thanks for your input!

You can hang them on the wall open side out and fill them with a nice bed of straw.

Back in Ga I used those big black plastic coke crates. They were easy to get because Coke-A-Cola had a huge bottling plant near us.

I was about to run out and change them all around!

Thanks, ladies. I found some baskets at Big Lots tonight, they were like shopping baskets with the handles. I didn't buy them yet. The way the coop is, I'll probably have to set them on the floor in the corner. DH isn't crazy about hanging anything else in the coop. Ok, I don't think he's crazy about any more of my projects for him! Will the nests be okay sitting on the floor?

I use them, hung on the wall, just a foot up or so...filled with the most fluffiest hay....my hens love it.

I have Barred Rocks that like to fly around inside the coop. If I set a crate or basket on the floor, would they tip it over? I'm surprised how big our girls are already.
