I read on the label of my food grade DE bag that I shouldn't breath it in. WOW! That's hard to do! I just put some down for the first time and DID notice a heavyness on my chest. Is this stuff bad for me? Do you use a mask when stirring the litter? What about the health of my birds?

I use D.E. on all of my animals and in the coop. I put it in the coop while the chickens are having out time. I think the biggest problem with breathing it in has to do with people who have asthma or other resperatory problems as the dust can cause an attack. A mask will certainly help if the dust is too much for you. I have also heard the best time to apply it outside is right after a gentile rain. This helps it to stick and reduces the dust.

I agree with the other posts. I put it down when the birds are in their yard. I also sprinkle a little in their nest boxes, run and their favorite dusting places.
