Using sand in coop to keep down flies?

We live in a hot climate, and so as it's warming up here, the flies are growing more numerous. I've noticed that alot are being attracted to our coop which we only clean out every week. I've read at some point here about using sand in coops and scooping it with a cat litter scoop daily to keep down the flies? Does anybody have any experiance with this, and does it work?
