Hi, I'm kinda new at this. I was wondering if chickens can have blackberries? I would like to put some on the outside of the run between it and the outer fence to help keep the nieghbors dog away, since I can't see that side of the run from the house. There is horse fencing which the nieghbor dog just goes under whenever he feels like it. I thought a blackberry bush olong that whole side might be a good idea. Then they could eat any blackberries that happen to fall into the run. Is this OK?

LOL I could send you some. you arn't far from me and I don't care for blackberries, but my mom has a huge bush she is always wanting to give me starts and pies. Do you think it will help deter the dog?

Yes, unless it's a long haired dog or very motivated dog. Most dogs don't like briars...

Thanks for the offer on starts but I have some already. In fact, I'm trying to relocate them and they aren't cooperating as of now.

Chickens Love blackberries. Mine eat them and leave purple droppings EVERYWHERE. They are an invasive species out here. Are you sure a dog can't get though it? I know here they grow up and pile on each other so you end up with a 10-15 foot canopy of live vines on dead vines. The chickens all go hide under it when hawks come round.

I know how you feel. One bird poops them out then it grows like a weed. I have a mess of blackberry bushes that took over the whole horse barn. Its about 20 feet wide and about 10 feet high. I am trying to root them and put them on the side of my run

It's a short-hair black lab mix. He is very annoying. Tears up trash, poos in yard, barks and growls at my and my visitors. Ignores the chickens so far. He was brazen enough to come in the yard while I was out in the run with them the other day!

I just thought the bush would keep him away from the other side. I guess, if I put one there, I should keep it trimed so it stays close to the ground.

ANY dog that growls at me, is DEAD. Would not put up with it. Warn owner of dog, better yet, let them know northern IN does have lawyers--$$ seems to motivate more than threats of violence. Altho dog growls at me, not a threat, is a promise, it is fertilizer.
