Ummm, not sure if this is the same thing you're asking about, but I have a "vent free" fireplace. No chimney. Uses a ceramic log, behind which you put cans of gelled fuel (kinda like sterno but not liquid). So you get actual flame, actual heat, and it doesn't require any vent, chimney, nor does it need to have fuel piped to it. You just open the can(s) - I use two when it's really cold - and light 'em with a long match, and voila! A fireplace.
They're zero clearance, so they can be put right up against a wall. Wish I had a photo of mine - it's got a mantle perfect for hanging stockings at Christmas, has green marble inserts facing front on either side of the firebox, and it CAN be moved from one room to another if one has a couple of pretty strong guys to perform that task for you.
I love mine. I had it originally in my double-wide mobile home for nigh on 12 years, and when I moved to a house, brought it with me. My landlady is impressed with it.
The cans of fuel are pricey, but I do live in California and don't need to light a fire very often. I use it a lot for ambience, with just one can lighted. ;-) But it does kick out some real good heat with 2 cans.
