I’m worried this will become worse as she keeps pecking at the vent area. It may be one of the chicks I wiped poop off when they arrived but unsure. No poop visible now but Area getting a little raw from her pecking at it. I sprayed vetricin on it and dabbed the blue dye on it. Was this ok? Is there anything else I can do? I can see this getting worse if the others start picking at her. I can’t isolate her as they get so upset if separated. Also, since she’s packing on herself, I don’t think it would make a difference. I’d appreciate any suggestions. This is a darling little chick. Thanks.

Blu kote? That’ll keep anyone else from pecking it and should help some, but for clarification is it the chick itself that’s pecking her own vent? Maybe a little coconut oil to help it heal would be good on it.

Yes, she’s pecking at it herself. I did apply blue coat to camouflage it from the rest of the flock. Thanks for the tip. I am going to apply some coconut oil and see if that helps. Maybe I irritated it yesterday removing poop. I have a new chicks and I’m not sure if she was one of the ones that needed some help in that area yesterday.

She’s probably pecking it because it’s tender so I would do the coconut oil two or three times a day and see how that works. Hope she feels better!

Hi there just thought I’d provide a follow up in case anyone else has my problem. Her vent is fine now I think the helpful hints I received plus especially a little dab of coconut or orally seem to soften her stool. The chicks are on sand in the brooderAnd maybe that contributed to a harder stool. Thanks for all the input as usual BYC members are so great!
