Hey there,

I found one of my hens lethargic in a nesting box an hour ago. There was blood everywhere and her entire bum was bloody. I thought it may be prolapsed so I soaked her in some epsom salt water and tried to clean the area up. There is a lot of blood/insides still there. I cannot tell if this is a prolapse or if she has some sort of poop stuck? The bulge in the picture is black and almost seems detached from the rest of her. Almost as if it's inside her vent, but I can't get it out so I'm thinking that it is her vent. I believe that my other chickens have pecked at her and made this a lot worse. She won't eat or drink :( She's passing urates/wet poop. As well as dripping blood. I am very worried about this situation. What should I do next?

Keep her separated out.
I agree, it looks like the tissue has been damaged due to picking.

After giving her a cleanup, keep the tissue coated with oil, honey, ointment, etc., so it doesn't dry out. That hardened material may also be tissue that's dried out. I wouldn't try to pull it out. Keep it coated with your ointment of choice.

She may still have to expel an egg, hard to know. I'd start plying her with sugar water to get her hydrated and her glucose levels back up. I'd also give her 1 Calcium Citrate+D3 tablet once daily for a few days.

Hopefully the damage is not too bad and she will heal up. I had one that had severe damage and had to be put down, very sad.
