Sorry for the close-up vent post around breakfast time but pretty sure you’ve all seen it plenty times. This was one of chicks that came in last week. I now know its a Chantecler It showed up with what looked like a beak injury, which is mostly healed now. It also had pasty butt. I cleaned it all up and its vent was swollen, red and irritated and poking out. The chick was obviously uncomfortable. Its poop was liquidy. It was drinking fine but I noticed it would put its head in the food tray but not actually take the food. Fast forward, I made a mash for food and it tore it up and didn’t take long to start eating out of tray. I read posts in this forum (thank goodness this exists!!) and started using Vetericyn, witch hazel and hydrocortisone ointment. Here’s where I am at. Super active happy chick that poops regular and has no more irritation and redness BUT if this is prolapse, will it go away on it’s own? Is there something else I need to do? I pressed on it once to see if it was hard (wasnt) and chick projectile pooped on me

I would watch and see if it gets back to normal. It may have been straining to poo when it had pasty butt. Now that it is eating well and has normal poops it may improve. I would continue to use the cortisone cream on the prolapsed vent twice a day. Some chicks outgrow this problem while some die. But it sounds promising. If there is any constipation, offer an ml of mineral oil mixed into a small amount of wet feed. I would also give a couple of drops of Poultry NutriDrench for a couple of days as a boost.

Thanks! I actually considered adding something to the water but wasn’t sure what would be okay to add in this situation. I’m becoming a regular at the feed store in less than a month . The crazy chicken life has begun
