If you live somewhere that gets near or below freezing in the winter, or severe sideways rainstorms sometimes, it is awfully nice to be able to close windows when needed. (And if your username indicates you're in W VA or NC or such, then yes, this means you
) So I would suggest having at least SOME way of covering your windows, either openable house-type windows or hinged plexiglass panels or whatever.
1x1 welded wire is fine if the windows are pretty far from the roosts. If there will be a roost within a coupla feet of the window, 1/2" hardwarecloth is much safer (raccoons can climb things you would htink were unclimbable, and pull out handfuls of live chicken thru 1" mesh til it is no longer live chicken...)
Windows are not really the best ventilation plan, btw. In summertime they are inadequate in many areas (unless yo have cool summers and/or a *lot* of *very very large* windows) and in cold winters they don't work so well either (in cold winters you're better off with vents up high on the downwind wall(s), in terms of removing maximum humidity with minimum draft). Not that I am in any way against windows -- windows are good
-- but you usually need more than *just* that for good coop ventilation.
Good luck, have fun,
Pat
